Nord ATEX compliant gear units and motors - mining (Sep 2008)
BMG Drives, a division of the Bearing Man Group, specialises in the supply and assembly of industrial gearboxes and electric motors that ensure optimum performance of energy efficient mechanical speed control in demanding applications on the mines.
Included in the Nord range are ATEX compliant gear units, motors and frequency inverters that enable safe and efficient operation in hazardous environments.
"ATEX directives extend the Ex protection standards (94/9/EG and 99/92/EG) to non-electrical equipment like gear units," says Mark Barbour, divisional director, BMG Drives. "ATEX compliant Nord units are designed to operate in gas and dust hazard areas. With respect to vapour and gas explosion protection, Nord units are EEX e II (increased safety, Zone 1 and 2) and EEx de IIC or IIB (flameproof enclosure, increased safety for terminal box, Zone 1 and 2) specified. They are also suitable for use in dust Zones 21 and 22.
"The surface T classification of the Nord motor, its mounting position, additional forces applied to the output shaft and the necessity of frequency inverter control mean Nord drives meet the stringent specifications of the Ex-Zone."
Nord gear reducers, which are available with IP 67 enclosure protection, can be modified and precisely adjusted for all installation spaces in machines. They are also suited for the special requirements of materials handling on the mines.
Nord drives, which are leak -free and insensitive to dusty conditions, are also able to withstand large ambient temperature ranges.
Nordbloc compact geared motors, which are also available in ATEX compliant models, have been upgraded for interchangeability, high efficiency, low noise levels, extended service life, fast assembly and reduced maintenance.
Nord's Unicase geared motor housing - in which all bearing seats are located in a rigid one-piece casting - was patented in 1980 for helical in-line, shaft mount, helical bevel and helical worm gearboxes. The Unicase design has now been developed to create the Nordbloc drive range, which offers a compact size unit, with increased power output. This design is fully interchangeable with other European brands and provides higher ratios, lower speeds and higher output torques within the compact size of the basic housing.
Easy interchangeability is guaranteed by coaxial input and output shafts and identical mounting dimensions of the double and triple reduction design of these units. There are seven sizes available with foot or flange mounting, which cover the power range of 0,12 to 37 kW with torque capacities of 82 to 3 000 Nm.
The new Nordbloc housing, which has a plain and smooth corrosion resistant aluminium die-cast surface, is designed for two and three stage gear units. All gear sizes are ventilated, which increases the service life of shaft seals. The housing has a reduced weight and with the new design, there are no assembly covers or sealing caps.
The innovative design concept of Nordbloc - with staggered bearings, where one bearing is situated in the short IEC adapter and the opposite bearing is in the output shaft - increases bearing life.
Hardened gears ensure smooth and quiet operation at maximum load capacity. To meet the requirements of diverse applications, Nordbloc gearboxes come with reduced backlash as standard.
Modular Nord drive systems are easy to expand or upgrade, using a minimum of different type and size components. The result is a comprehensive product range with almost universal applications for mechanical designers in materials handling.
The latest technology used in the design and manufacture of Nord motors, gears and electronic controllers, enables savings of up to 40% in operating expenses.
Local assembly enables prompt delivery of these components and the ready availability of spare parts.
