on Charles Walters, CEO, BMG. (Sep 2008)
Charles Edward Walters (40) is the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of BMG, a subsidiary of Invicta Holdings Limited, and also serves on the Invicta Board of Directors as an Alternate Executive Director.
He is well-qualified with both a BSC (Mech. Eng.) and a B Comm degree and has also completed a PMD at Harvard Business School. With this unique combination of a mechanical engineering and commercial qualification, Walters began his career with Anglo American Corporation in 1986.
He joined as a Corporate Graduate Engineering trainee and during the next 14 years, held numerous positions within the Anglo group, quickly rising through the ranks from his first position as a mechanical engineer.
In 1996, Walters was appointed Marketing and Sales Manager – Pulp at Mondi SA. In 2002, he was appointed Managing Director of Mondi Sales International, heading up their international sales operations from Ireland.
After four successful years at the helm of Mondi Sales International, Walters relocated to South Africa and joined Bearing Man as the new CEO in October 2006. This was soon followed by his appointment as Alternate Director to DI Samuels on the Invicta board in 2007.
His international experience and his immense expertise ideally prepared Walters for the challenges he faced in a new country and a new industry, with assets totalling R650-million and over 1800 employees.
With a bold vision for the future of BMG, Walters believes there are many diverse opportunities for the company and has implemented company-wide efficiency drives and capacity expansion programmes, including the development of key technical and logistical skills and a powerful re-branding initiative.
These initiatives are in line with his fair, yet firm, approach to business with the objective to ensure a happy and healthy environment for all the company’s stakeholders, including customers, suppliers and employees.
Recognising the risk of the severe shortage of quality technical skills in the engineering sector, Walters firmly believes that highly skilled employees are the key to success. “We want to ensure that the best technically-skilled people service BMG’s customers. In this regard, developing and retaining technical skills, technical training and knowledge transfer from overseas suppliers, our internship programme, and broad-based black economic empowerment (BBBEE), are focus areas for the company.”
Walters describes his leadership style as “empowering”.
“I am very fortunate to be surrounded by a team of competent professionals. The BMG team shares a fantastic spirit, amazing loyalty and exceptional team work. I see it as my responsibility to create the environment to allow the BMG team to take the company to ever greater heights.
Other strategic focus areas for Walters include continuous research and development, as well as finding more cost-competitive ways of doing business.
“BMG is currently the largest profit contributor in the Invicta group, and we plan to maintain this position, while further entrenching BMG’s position as the leading distributor of dynamic engineering consumable products in Africa,” concludes Walters.
