BMG’s Energy Efficient Power Transmission (Feb 2008)
BMG, leading distributors of engineering consumables, has a range of energy efficient power transmission components that are designed to significantly reduce electricity consumption in diverse industries.
“Through a wide product range and technical expertise, BMG is able to assist our diverse customer base to optimise a plant’s energy consumption and efficiency,” says Charles Walters, CEO of BMG. “These energy efficient products, which include quality branded electric motors, self adjusting motor bases, frequency inverters, fluid couplings and synthetic oils, ensure optimum efficiency, reduced power consumption, low maintenance and extended service life.”
Nord drives have been designed by German manufacturers, Getriebebau Nord, specifically with energy efficiency in mind. These drives, which are assembled locally by Power Drives, ensure optimum performance of mechanical speed control in demanding applications.
Nord’s energy efficient drives, which meet stringent local and international standards (including the European EFF1 norm and ISO 9001 specifications) have earned a reputation throughout the world for reducing the costs of operation.
The latest technology used in the design and manufacture of motors, gears and electronic controllers, enables savings of up to 40% in operating expenses.
Because of an optimised gear design and the use of synthetic lubricants, mechanical wear is reduced in gears used for energy efficient Nord drives. Maintenance requirements are also minimal.
Power Drives has extended its range of Nord frequency inverters and now distributes Danfoss frequency inverters that enhance the division’s ability to supply energy efficient products for system integration solutions, as well as automation of industrial plants.
Danfoss variable speed drives have saved more than 20-million MWh energy globally in 2006. This is the equivalent to the annual electricity consumption of about 5-million houses and the energy saved here has an impact on the annual CO2 emission – a reduction of about 12-million tons.
Power Drives will soon be launching a new range of high efficiency motors that has passed extensive testing required by industry. These motors are likely to reduce electricity consumption by up to 35%.
Oscillating Systems Technology Africa (OST Africa), part of the BMG group, has launched a new range of energy efficient self-adjusting motor bases (S.A.M Base) that enables quick, easy and accurate change out and tensioning of V-belts for efficient power transmission.
The S.A.M base, which keeps the V-belt tensioned, ensures substantially reduced electricity consumption as this system prevents wastage of kilowatts that normally results from V-belts slipping. Loss of electricity caused by V-belt slippage can be as high as 25%.
These energy efficient motor bases automatically adjust the motor to its new position as belt stretch occurs. High quality rubber of these motor bases has the capacity to be pre-tensioned and can retain torsional force and release it when necessary, automatically maintaining required tension on V-belts.
Transfluid fluid couplings - for hydrodynamic transmission - improve the overall performance of internal combustion engines and electric motors. Advantages of these corrosion-resistant fluid couplings include smooth start-ups, reduced current absorptions during the starting phase and protection of the motor and driven machine from jams and overloads.
These low maintenance couplings also ensure higher energy savings, because of current peak reduction and optimum efficiency of the system. Especially important is the fact that the drive can always be started at low load conditions.
With the KX series, a starting torque limitation of below 50% the electric motor nominal torque can be achieved.
The Transfluid range, which also includes variable speed drives and oil operated power take off units, is available exclusively from BMG.
BMG also distributes locally manufactured environmentally friendly Habot synthetic and speciality lubricants, which are designed to meet the exact lubricating needs in diverse industries. Because of the inherent stability of Habot’s molecular structure and its ability to withstand heat and oxidation, these synthetic lubricants offer longer service life than conventional mineral oils. Higher film strength means the ability of synthetic oils to withstand heavy loading and high speeds and also prevents metal on metal contact, thus reducing wear.
BMG, specialists in bearings, seals, power transmission products, industrial gearboxes and belting, as well as fasteners, has a national network of over 100 outlets, with a technically competent team able to advise users in diverse industries on how to achieve energy efficient and low maintenance power transmission systems.
