Conveyor drives for Foskor Project (May 2009)

“The R4-million order for BMG, consists of six overland conveyor drives, one shuttle conveyor drive, two stock pile feed conveyors drives, one sacrificial conveyor drive and a tunnel reclaim conveyor drive,” says Pat Bertillon, BMG’s project manager. “This complete drive system, with a total mass of 70 tons, combines elements like electric motors, grid and fluid couplings, reduction gearboxes and fabricated baseplates, as well as coupling guards, into a single unit.

“BMG’s drive system enables Foskor engineers to optimise drive selection to the exact power, torque, speed and duty cycles for optimum performance, quiet operation, reduced wear and minimal maintenance. This system also ensures absolute accountability for performance, warranty and delivery completion dates, from a single source.”

BMG’s drive system consists of Paramax bevel helical gearboxes, which offer an extensive ratio selection, optimum flexibility and a wider tooth face. A unique feature of these reducers are precision ground helical gears that are protuberance hobbed and ground to a 25° degree normal pressure angle. The benefits of this design include high durability and exceptional tolerance for shock and momentary over-loads. The new fan and shroud design increases thermal capacity by up to 87%.

Expansion to this operation will increase production in the south Pyroxenite open pit in Phalaborwa by 20-million tons, to 30-million tons of ore per annum.

BMG’s drive system has been delivered to the mine and commissioning of the expansion project is scheduled for the end of 2009.
